A new round of local equipment funding is about to open for eligible Roanoke businesses, and the owners who prepare before October 1 will likely be in the best position to move.
According to the announced details for the City of Roanoke Economic Development Authority’s Business Equipment Incentive Program, the next funding round opens October 1, 2026 at 8:00 a.m. The authority has committed $250,000 for this round and will again offer a 50/50 match on eligible equipment purchases.
For local owners, that makes this less of a general news item and more of a practical deadline.
What the money can help cover
The announced program details split funding into two tracks:
- Manufacturing and industrial businesses: up to $20,000 per business
- Commercial and retail businesses: up to $5,000 per business
The city says funding can be used for equipment that is taxed as Business Personal Property or is subject to the Machinery and Tools Tax. Motor vehicles are not eligible. Equipment also has to be purchased after the grant application is approved.
That means this is not a blank check for anything a business wants to buy. It is targeted help for qualifying equipment under a specific city program.
Which businesses may qualify
The published summary says a business must:
- have operated in a commercially zoned location in the City of Roanoke for at least one year before October 1, 2026
- be current on all City of Roanoke business taxes
- hold a valid City of Roanoke business license
- employ at least two full-time W-2 employees if applying in the manufacturing or industrial sector
- employ at least one full-time W-2 employee if applying in the retail or commercial sector
The city also says businesses that received funding from the 2025-2026 Business Equipment Incentive Program are not eligible for this year’s round.
Why owners should not wait until opening day to get organized
The announcement says funding is limited and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications close when funds are fully committed.
In plain English, that usually means the businesses that already know what they need, what it costs, and whether they can prove eligibility have the advantage.
